University of Silesia Rector Wieslaw Banys and U.S. Consul General Allen Greenberg signed a memorandum of understanding on March 29, agreeing to open an American Corner. The Corner will be located in the building that is currently home to the university library and is planned to open in September of this year. The library is moving to an award winning new building, located near the current library. That building will also be home to other cultural and language institutes, including the Goethe Institute, British Council and Alliance Francaise.
The American Corner will be the sixth in Poland, joining Gdansk, Lodz, Wroclaw, Radom and Lublin as host cities. Around the world there are more than 400 American Corners. In addition to providing access to books, media, and databases about the United States, American Corners are also venues for exhibitions and other cultural events.
